The Oman Sail Performance Team made a remarkable appearance at the 39th MSA–NSC–MILO National Open Championship 2025 held in Langkawi, Malaysia. This prestigious international competition saw participation from robust national and international fleets. Throughout the event, sailors engaged in 12 races across classes such as ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7, and 29er, each presenting varying wind and sea conditions.
The results from Oman Sail were commendable, offering invaluable experience, particularly for those making their international debut. Their achievements align with Oman Sail's strategic vision, aiming for successes at the upcoming 2026 Asian Games and the second Arab Sailing Championship for Women, which is set to take place in Kuwait from 2–5 December 2025.
The 29er crew participated in their international debut during this championship. While it was their first taste of global competition, they quickly learned about full-fleet racing, effective tactical positioning, and handling their boats under pressure. Tamim Al Balushi and Saleh Al Balushi finished in 4th place, while Soud Al Shaqsi and Firas Al Nabhani earned 5th place overall, showcasing their potential for future international endeavors.
Meanwhile, the Asyad ILCA 4 squad also displayed strong performances. They skillfully adapted to fluctuating wind conditions while managing interactions with their peers and sustaining competitive boat speeds. Abdulatif Al Qasmi notably clinched 3rd place, while fellow teammates Hassan Al Wahaibi and Aws Al Busaidi secured 13th and 14th places, respectively, indicating a promising future in upcoming competitions.
In the ILCA 6 Women's category, Ibtisam Al Salmi secured an 8th place finish, reflecting her notable improvements and several top-three placements during the championship. Hussain Al Jabri in the competitive ILCA 7 fleet consistently performed well, ultimately achieving 8th place against fierce competition from top Asian sailors.
Hashim Al Rashdi, Head Coach Performance at Oman Sail, remarked, "This championship marks a significant phase in our competitive journey, especially with the 2026 Asian Games on the horizon. The team demonstrated exceptional spirit, with a podium finish in the ILCA 4 and top five results in the 29er class during their inaugural international outing, which is quite promising."
He further added, "The lessons learned regarding full-fleet pressure management, adaptability to various conditions, and tactical decision-making will be invaluable. We’ve pinpointed our strengths, such as enhanced boat handling, alongside areas needing focus like start-line execution and race stamina. This will aid in cultivating swift, confident, and effective sailors as we move forward in competitions."
The championship took place at the National Sailing Centre in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia, organized by the Kedah Sailing Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Education, the National Sport Council, and the Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA). This event brought together elite sailors and highlighted the growing talent and competitiveness of Oman Sail’s team on the global stage.
