After much user feedback, ChatGPT has amended its excessive use of the em dash. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, shared this news on X, labeling it a “small-but-happy win” for writers and editors who have faced challenges with the chatbot’s punctuation choices. Users can now request ChatGPT to suppress em dashes, and the AI will adhere to these preferences in future interactions.
What was once a minor annoyance became a well-known characteristic of AI-generated writing. Even when users clearly asked for “no em dashes,” ChatGPT frequently overlooked this, leading to memes and humorous responses online. This update enhances OpenAI's “custom instructions” feature, granting users greater control over tone, style, and punctuation.
Additionally, OpenAI has rolled out Group Chats, allowing up to 20 users to engage with ChatGPT simultaneously. This social feature enhances collaboration, enabling the AI to assist with brainstorming, answering questions, or steering discussions. Currently in a pilot phase in regions like Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Taiwan, this feature is set to expand worldwide.
This change aligns with OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to improve user interactions and experiences. New initiatives like Sora for short-form AI video content and Atlas, an AI browser for Mac, exemplify the company’s strategy to broaden its offerings beyond traditional chat services and provide innovative, practical tools.
With em dash issues resolved and new collaborative features introduced, ChatGPT is advancing into a more multifunctional assistant, balancing stylistic precision with social interactions—while ensuring users maintain control over its communication style.
