OpenAI has launched an urgent acceleration initiative after CEO Sam Altman declared a “code red,” reallocating teams from various sectors to concentrate exclusively on improving ChatGPT. This internal directive, communicated via memo and Slack, marks one of the most extensive resource reallocations within the organization since earlier significant product launches.
Sources close to the situation indicate that Altman has instructed staff involved in advertising, AI agents, and shopping tools to halt their work and contribute to enhancing ChatGPT’s functionality. Cross-team communications have already started, with some personnel transitioning into new roles for this concentrated effort.
This strategy highlights the increasing intensity in the global AI competition. Google's Gemini 3 model, recently unveiled, has been lauded across the tech landscape for its reasoning and coding capabilities. OpenAI’s leadership is acutely aware that ChatGPT must progress rapidly to maintain its competitive advantage, particularly as Google’s Gemini application reportedly reached 650 million users in November.
Nevertheless, OpenAI maintains a strong lead in user scale, recently reporting that ChatGPT serves approximately 800 million weekly users, with 93 million monthly app downloads—significantly exceeding Gemini’s 73 million users in October, as per Sensor Tower statistics.
Altman’s directive emphasized the need for advancements that enhance ChatGPT’s personalization, intuitiveness, and power. Internally, the organization is also advancing developments in AI behavior and image generation. Reports indicate that a new model, codenamed “Garlic,” is being tested, displaying promising results in coding and reasoning evaluations.
This high-stakes sprint includes daily coordination meetings led by principal ChatGPT teams, with temporary assignments from other divisions to expedite outcomes. Although OpenAI has not commented specifically on the memo, senior management has reiterated publicly that enhancing ChatGPT’s features and outreach is a foremost company objective.
As competition escalates in the AI sector, companies like Anthropic are also introducing new models designed to automate office and coding tasks, vying for the same enterprise clients that OpenAI and Google are competing to capture. The industry stakes and expectations are rising as major tech firms double down on their investments.
