Orlando Magic's Anthony Black Shines in 144-103 Victory Against 76ers

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a spectacular NBA Cup matchup, Anthony Black led the Orlando Magic to a dominating 144-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. Black achieved a career-high 31 points, with a remarkable 27 points in the opening half, featuring a stellar 20-point second quarter. His performance was pivotal in helping Orlando break franchise records, including 51 points scored in a single quarter and 86 points by halftime.

The Magic, playing without standout Paolo Banchero due to a groin injury, demonstrated impressive depth and cohesion. Nine players reached double figures, with Franz Wagner contributing 21 points and Desmond Bane adding 15 points. The bench also shone, amassing 82 points—the highest total recorded by any NBA team this season. Black and Jett Howard spearheaded bench scoring, with Howard finishing with 13 points.

The 76ers struggled to mount a challenge, missing key players like Joel Embiid, Paul George, and VJ Edgecombe. Tyrese Maxey was Philadelphia's highest scorer with 20 points, while Jared McCain added 15. Although the teams were tied at 35-35 after the first quarter, Orlando surged ahead in the second.

In under four minutes, the Magic established a double-digit lead. Black struck seven points during this crucial stretch, including a vital 3-pointer that pushed the score to 49-39. Jalen Suggs assisted Black with a half-court alley-oop, followed by two more 3-pointers, giving Orlando a 57-43 advantage. They further extended their lead to 68-52 with just over three minutes left in the half, culminating a 9-0 run before halftime, courtesy of Wagner and Howard, which left the score at 86-60.

In the third quarter, Black's smooth finger roll pushed the lead beyond 30 points, followed by a staggering 17-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Tristan da Silva that made it 111-69. The Magic consistently maintained control throughout the game, showcasing remarkable shooting, teamwork, and defense.

Orlando's momentum carried into the fourth quarter, where they led by as many as 46 points. While Black's exceptional performance was a highlight, the team’s collective effort, including bench contributions and solid defense, defined the match.

An altercation toward the end of the second quarter led to six technical fouls, with Suggs receiving a double-technical and ultimately ejected. Nonetheless, he finished with a career-high 11 assists in just 16 minutes, playing a vital role in the Magic’s record-setting first half.

Black's scoring prowess complemented a display of teamwork and strategy from the Magic. The absence of Philadelphia’s star players significantly impacted the game's outcome. Orlando’s record-breaking performance in the first half and the record-setting quarter established a strong foundation for future games this season.
