Ottawa River Flood Affects Nearly 500 Structures in Gatineau

Post by : Shweta

The Ottawa River has caused flooding that has impacted roughly 500 structures in Gatineau. Fortunately, officials indicate that the situation is starting to stabilize after a period of heavy rains and spring snowmelt.

Authorities mentioned that approximately 190 buildings are directly flooded, with an additional 296 at risk of isolation due to rising waters. This situation has led to some residents evacuating their homes, with at least 12 choosing to leave as a safety measure.

The flooding has also interfered with local infrastructure. Currently, 46 streets are affected, and 13 roads are accessible only via water travel. Flood warnings remain in effect along the river from Pembroke to Hawkesbury as officials continue to keep a close watch on the circumstances.

The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board reports that water levels in key locations have started to steady. While minor rises were noted earlier in the week, forecasts predict a gradual decrease in levels in the coming days, particularly in Hull. Authorities caution, however, that further increases could occur later this spring due to lingering snow in northern areas.

Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette of Gatineau has advised residents to stay vigilant even with signs of stabilizing conditions. Although this is positive, water levels remain precariously high, and the community is still at risk. Emergency response teams are closely monitoring the situation, and residents are urged to keep protective measures like dikes in place and to stay away from flooded roads.

In response to the flood, support services have been activated, including the establishment of assistance centers where residents can engage with relief organizations such as the Red Cross. These centers are designed to help those affected address immediate needs and plan future steps.

Transportation has also been impacted by the flooding; a ferry service between Cumberland and Masson has been suspended due to hazardous water conditions. In Ottawa, local authorities have advised boaters to avoid the river to minimize damage from waves against flood barriers and homes.

Additionally, flood warnings have been extended to other local waterways, including parts of the Mississippi River watershed, where further rises are anticipated before levels eventually begin to drop.

Overall, while initial signs indicate improvement, officials highlight that the threat remains. Residents in lower-lying and flood-prone sectors should remain alert, as upcoming weather and runoff conditions will play a crucial role in the area’s recovery.
