Oubre Jr. Propels 76ers to Narrow Victory Over Celtics

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a nail-biting finish, Kelly Oubre Jr. delivered a game-winning shot with only 8.7 seconds left, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a gripping 102-100 triumph against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday evening. Oubre's crucial bucket came following an offensive rebound from a missed shot by his teammate Justin Edwards, energizing the crowd at Wells Fargo Center and clinching a vital win over their Eastern Conference rivals.

Rookie forward Justin Edwards had an impressive performance, scoring a personal best of 22 points with an outstanding 8-of-9 shooting efficiency. While his final attempt failed, Oubre's subsequent rebound and follow-up shot were instrumental in the win. Edwards' sharp performance played a pivotal role in helping the Sixers overcome an eight-point deficit late in the game.

Tyrese Maxey was another standout for the 76ers, contributing 21 points and nine assists. Despite facing shooting challenges (5-for-17), Maxey’s leadership and energy were critical throughout the contest. Off the bench, Quentin Grimes added 18 points, highlighted by a significant half-court shot at the end of the third quarter, which kept Philadelphia close in the contest.

Leading the Celtics was Jaylen Brown with 24 points, while Derrick White supplied 18 points and seven assists. Anfernee Simons also added 17 points but struggled with shooting efficiency, impacting Boston's rhythm, especially during crunch time. Though the Celtics battled back late to equalize, they were unable to score again to secure the win.

With just six minutes left in the fourth, Philadelphia was trailing by eight points. Edwards ignited a comeback, sinking three consecutive 3-pointers in under 90 seconds, putting the 76ers ahead 93-92. This shift in momentum changed the course of the game. VJ Edgecombe later added a long-range 3-pointer, extending the lead to 100-96 for the Sixers. Boston responded with a 3-pointer from White and a free throw from Brown, tying the game at 100 with 33 seconds remaining.

After Edwards missed a mid-range shot on the ensuing play, Oubre seized the rebound and scored the go-ahead basket at 102-100. Boston had one last opportunity but Andre Drummond registered a crucial defensive play against White. As White's desperate half-court attempt fell short and Neemias Queta's last-second tip-in also missed, the final buzzer sounded. Drummond capped his night with 14 points and 13 rebounds, bolstering Philadelphia's defense.

The initial half was a competitive exchange with both teams trading leads, but by halftime, the 76ers were holding a narrow 51-41 lead after dominating Boston’s offense in the second quarter, allowing only 19 points.

Returning from the break, Boston intensified its approach, quickly scoring eleven straight points to regain the advantage. Derrick White's scoring surge late in the third quarter propelled the Celtics ahead, but Grimes’ remarkable half-court basket kept the game close, concluding the quarter at 77-71 in Boston's favor.

As the final quarter unfolded, both teams exchanged points. Anfernee Simons netted back-to-back 3-pointers early, but the 76ers, driven by Edwards, Oubre, and Maxey, pushed back to assume the lead in the closing minutes, culminating in Oubre’s critical winning moment.

This win boosted the 76ers' momentum as they advance in the season. For Oubre, it marked a redemptive moment showcasing his clutch performance. The close contest, ultimately leaving Boston with a bitter taste, nonetheless highlighted their resilience. Fans experienced an exhilarating display of Eastern Conference basketball, filled with surprising turns and impressive efforts from both teams.
