Islanders Edge Out Golden Knights 4-3 in Thrilling Overtime

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a thrilling NHL contest on Thursday, Jean-Gabriel Pageau netted an unassisted short-handed goal just 3:02 into overtime, propelling the New York Islanders to a 4-3 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights in Las Vegas. Pageau seized a loose puck, sped down the right flank, and unleashed a wrist shot past Vegas goalie Akira Schmid to clinch the match.

The Islanders showcased impressive team dynamics with notable contributions from players. Matthew Schaefer registered a goal and an assist, while Bo Horvat and Jonathan Drouin each had two assists. Emil Heineman and Mathew Barzal also found the net. Goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves, improving to 4-0-1 in the past five games and enhancing his all-time record against Vegas to 4-2-1.

For the Golden Knights, Shea Theodore, Tomas Hertl, and Reilly Smith scored goals, but Schmid’s 20 saves couldn’t prevent Vegas from enduring its fourth straight loss at home, marking a challenging 0-2-2 streak despite starting strong.

In the opening period, Vegas initially dominated, keeping the Islanders shotless for the first 10:42. However, New York struck first when Emil Heineman scored at 14:03, with a wrist shot deflecting off Jack Eichel's stick and into the net. Schaefer furthered the Islanders' advantage with a power-play goal soon after.

Late in the second period, Theodore closed the gap to 2-1 with a wrist shot from the right point that snuck inside the left post. The Golden Knights rallied in the third, with Hertl equalizing on a rebound and Smith giving Vegas their first lead at 3-2 with a sharp-angled goal.

With 3:10 to go, New York pulled Sorokin for an extra skater, and Mathew Barzal equalized with a crucial one-timer, forcing overtime at 3-3. The momentum shifted in favor of the Islanders as Pageau scored the game-winning goal in overtime.

This triumph marks the Islanders' third consecutive win, showcasing their unity and determination. Sorokin's stellar performance in goal and timely strikes from key players helped New York secure a vital road win against a fierce Vegas team.
