In a thrilling second one-day international encounter in Rawalpindi, Pakistan triumphed over Sri Lanka by eight wickets, thereby clinching the three-match series with a 2-0 victory. This match unfolded under heightened security measures due to a recent suicide bombing in Islamabad. Although Sri Lanka expressed concerns over safety, their cricket board insisted the series proceed as planned.
To ensure the safety of the Sri Lankan team, Pakistan deployed a robust presence of army and paramilitary forces. Army Chief Asim Munir reassured Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon of the players' safety during their stay, allowing the match to go on amidst a tense environment.
Sri Lanka started with the bat, showcasing a solid opening partnership worth 51 runs before Pathum Nissanka was run out while attempting a risky third run. Sadeera Samarawickrama contributed 42 runs but was dismissed by Haris Rauf. Janith Liyanage and Kamindu Mendis revived the innings with a partnership totaling 73 runs, while Wanindu Hasaranga ended not out on 37. Rauf and Abrar Ahmed were the stars with the ball, each claiming three wickets.
Pakistan began their chase of 289 runs with aggression. Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman targeted Sri Lanka’s bowling attack until Ayub was removed by Dushmantha Chameera for 33 runs. Babar Azam's partnership with Zaman focused on strike rotation, capitalizing on Sri Lanka's dropped catches. Zaman scored a well-made 78, paving the way for a critical partnership with Mohammad Rizwan.
Babar Azam, in a patient and calculated innings, achieved his 20th ODI century—the first in 84 international innings. Rizwan, remaining not out at 51, collaborated with Azam in a solid partnership of 112 runs. The duo propelled Pakistan to victory with 10 balls remaining, with Azam hitting the winning run, solidifying a remarkable performance under pressure.
The final ODI is set to take place in Rawalpindi this Sunday. Following the ODI matches, fans can look forward to a T20 tri-series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe starting Tuesday, as Pakistan seeks to enhance their momentum in home conditions.
