Islamabad:
Pakistan has significantly increased the levy on high-octane fuel by 200%, raising it from PKR 100 to PKR 300 per litre. The decision was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a high-level meeting focused on fuel pricing and economic measures.
The move comes amid rising global oil prices linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supply.
According to officials, the increased levy will mainly affect high-octane fuel used by luxury vehicles and is not expected to impact public transport fares or general commuting costs.
Following the revision, petrol prices have risen from PKR 266.17 to PKR 321.17 per litre, while diesel prices have increased from PKR 280.86 to PKR 335.86 per litre.
The meeting was attended by key ministers, including Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.
Earlier this month, Pakistan had already increased petrol and diesel prices by PKR 55 per litre due to rising global oil rates.
The impact of higher fuel costs is also visible in the aviation sector. Domestic airfares have increased by PKR 2,800 to PKR 5,000, while international ticket prices have gone up by PKR 10,000 to PKR 28,000, especially for routes to the Middle East and Central Asia.
Officials say the latest step aims to manage economic pressure while protecting essential transport costs for the public.
