Pakistan Faces Fifth Earthquake in a Month with 4.8 Magnitude

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In the early hours of Tuesday, Pakistan experienced a new earthquake, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), registering a magnitude of 4.8. This quake occurred at 1:21 am IST, with its epicenter recorded at a latitude of 25.48 degrees North and a longitude of 66.69 degrees East. The tremor, striking at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, poses an increased risk of damage to buildings and infrastructure due to intense ground shaking.

This event is the fifth seismic occurrence in Pakistan within a month, underscoring the nation's susceptibility to tectonic movements. On December 5, a less intense 3.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 40 kilometers. Furthermore, on November 25, a 4.3 magnitude quake was noted at a deeper level of 120 kilometers. Stronger tremors were recorded earlier, including a 5.2-magnitude at 135 kilometers depth on November 21 and a 3.9-magnitude event on November 20 at 10 kilometers depth.

Shallow earthquakes, like the one from Tuesday, are particularly hazardous as seismic waves have a brief distance to travel to the surface, resulting in heightened shaking. Several regions within Pakistan such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan lie on significant fault lines, amplifying their vulnerability to such seismic events. Even in Punjab and Sindh, which are positioned along the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate, there are considerable risks from tectonic boundaries.

Pakistan's location in the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates classifies it as one of the world's most earthquake-prone nations. Authorities continue to advise residents in affected areas to stay prepared for aftershocks and ensure proper safety measures are followed.

The recent tremor highlights the critical necessity for earthquake preparedness, as seismic activities have surged unpredictably in recent weeks. Both local communities and authorities are actively monitoring conditions to mitigate possible damage and safeguard public safety.
