The Pakistan Super League has welcomed two new teams, upping its total franchises from six to eight. This strategic move was confirmed on Thursday following a successful auction by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Ownership of the new franchises was claimed by two business entities for a total of 12.75 million dollars, approximately 114 crore rupees. OZ Developers obtained the Sialkot franchise with a bid of 1.85 billion Pakistani rupees, while the Hyderabad team was acquired by the FKS Group from the United States for 1.75 billion Pakistani rupees.
The value of the Hyderabad team acquisition has caught attention, as it nearly matches the combined IPL salaries of Indian cricketers Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Iyer’s contract is valued at around 26.75 crore rupees, while Pant's is approximately 27 crore rupees, highlighting the financial contrasts between PSL team ownership and IPL player salaries.
Despite the addition of two teams, the total fees for these new PSL franchises are still less than the collective salaries of the top players sold in the IPL 2026 auction. This indicates that while the PSL is advancing, it adheres to a more measured financial model.
The new season is set to kick off on March 26, with league officials optimistic that the introduction of two more teams will spur competition, enhance player opportunities, and attract audiences both within Pakistan and internationally.
In the upcoming season, Multan Sultans will remain under the management of the Pakistan Cricket Board. The franchise will be put up for sale post-tournament in April. Ali Tareen, the previous owner, was approved to bid for the new teams but opted out just before the auction.
Tareen expressed his commitment to South Punjab, indicating he may reassess his participation in the league once the Multan franchise becomes available again.
This auction outcome signals a strengthening confidence in the Pakistan Super League as a formidable T20 competition. With the introduction of new teams, increased investment, and growing interest, the PSL continues to enhance its status in the realm of international cricket.
