Mohammed Ibrahim, a 16-year-old American of Palestinian descent, has been liberated after spending nine months in Israeli custody without any charges. The teenager was detained at the age of 15 during a trip to the Israeli-occupied West Bank while visiting from Florida. Israeli officials accused him of throwing stones at settlers, a claim he vehemently denies.
Upon his release, Mohammed was rushed to the hospital due to his poor health, as he was found to be pale and underweight, suffering from ailments acquired during his detention. His uncle, Zeyad Kadur, expressed relief, calling the last nine months a “horrific and endless nightmare,” and emphasized that the family is now focused on getting him the medical attention he needs and helping him regain his childhood.
The US State Department welcomed the news of Mohammed’s release, confirming that they would continue to provide consular assistance to the family. Officials reiterated their commitment to the safety and well-being of American citizens. Earlier, Mohammed's father, Zahar Ibrahim, expressed disappointment at what he termed the lack of substantial efforts by the US administration to ensure his son's release. In a show of support, 27 US lawmakers had previously signed a letter urging the government to take more robust action in his case.
Mohammed was detained in Ofer Prison on the West Bank, which also contains adult inmates, including those convicted of serious crimes. Human rights organizations and the United Nations have voiced concerns regarding the detention of Palestinian minors, highlighting that many are held without charges and report experiencing mistreatment or torture. There are currently approximately 350 Palestinian minors in Israeli custody.
Following his release, the family is also demanding justice for Sayfollah Musallet, Mohammed's cousin, a 20-year-old dual US citizen who was allegedly killed by Israeli settlers during an altercation in July. Both cousins previously collaborated in their family-owned ice cream shop in Tampa, Florida. No legal actions have been initiated regarding Sayfollah’s death, and the family hopes that the US government will continue to offer them protection and support.
Mohammed Ibrahim's release not only brings relief to his family but also sheds light on the ongoing issues surrounding the detention of Palestinian youth, the treatment of US citizens overseas, and the larger human rights landscape in the West Bank.
