A significant shift is occurring in the UK's football broadcasting scene as Paramount+ has surpassed TNT Sports to obtain the major UEFA Champions League rights for the duration from 2027 to 2031.
This agreement represents a pivotal change: TNT Sports, which has been synonymous with Champions League coverage in the UK since the 2015-2016 season, will hand over most match broadcasts. Concurrently, Amazon Prime Video will maintain its key first-pick rights for Tuesday night matches, ensuring its ongoing role in the UK market.
The bidding process that resulted in Paramount's victory showcased the intensifying competition for elite football broadcasting rights among international media companies. Reports indicate that Paramount's offer was substantially higher than the current £1 billion deal held by TNT.
For BT Group and Warner Bros Discovery Inc., the parent companies of TNT Sports, this loss represents a considerable setback. They defended their bidding strategy, citing a commitment to financial accountability for both their business and customers. Despite this disruption, they maintain that their extensive sports portfolio, including the English Premier League and other exclusive events, remains robust.
This change also highlights Paramount's expanding ambitions within European sports, particularly as it already provides Champions League coverage in the U.S. However, for UK audiences, this transition may necessitate subscribing to a different platform to access key Champions League matches post-2027.
