Entry Fees Rise at Paris Museum Following High-Profile Jewel Heist

Post by : Meena Hassan

Effective January 14, tourists from outside the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA)—which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway—will now pay €32 ($37, AED 135.88) to access Paris's premier museum. A spokesperson revealed that visitors from the UK will face an even steeper fee.

This increase comes after a brazen heist on October 19, during which four thieves stole jewels worth $102 million, exposing critical security flaws at the renowned establishment. In response to this incident, one wing of the museum was partially closed starting in November due to pressing structural issues.

Following guidance from France’s state auditor emphasizing the need for enhanced security over acquisitions, museum officials announced plans to install 100 external surveillance cameras by the end of 2026. These initiatives are part of a larger renovation project spanning six years, intended to modernize amenities and bolster visitor safety.

Last year, the museum attracted nearly nine million guests, with around 75% of those from overseas. Authorities project that the revised entry fees could generate an extra €15-20 million annually, funding both security measures and ongoing improvements.

Other historic sites in France, such as the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House, are also anticipated to raise their ticket prices next year.

In recent developments, police have captured the four main perpetrators of the jewel theft along with others linked to the crime, although the stolen jewels remain unaccounted for.
