Penang Temple Shuts Down Aidilfitri Open House

Post by : Shakul

The temple in Penang has officially announced the cancellation of its Aidilfitri open house, clarifying that there are no plans for a substitute “unity banquet.” This statement comes in response to mixed messages from local officials about the potential for an alternate event.

Thean Hock Keong confirmed that no event is set for April 11, affirming that all associated activities have been axed. The temple stressed that claims regarding another organization taking over the event are incorrect.

Additionally, the temple distanced itself from rumors about a gathering at Dewan Panorama in Bagan Ajam. It highlighted that such misinformation has caused misunderstanding among the public and clarified its non-involvement in any event linked to that venue or date.

The situation unfolded after Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid mentioned that a “Majlis Jamuan Perpaduan” or unity banquet could still occur under a different organizer. However, the temple firmly rejected this notion, reaffirming that it will not host any related event.

This cancellation aligns with directives from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department, which prohibited the temple from hosting an Aidilfitri open house. Officials indicated that such events are classified as Islamic religious ceremonies and necessitate the approval of the relevant religious council.

In adherence to the directive, the temple expressed a desire to avoid any potential misunderstandings and sensitivities. Their original aim was to promote unity and strengthen community bonds through a celebration featuring halal food from local vendors.

While the temple conveyed disappointment, it called on local authorities and public figures to refrain from making conflicting or ambiguous statements, emphasizing the need for clear communication to mitigate confusion and uphold the goal of fostering harmony among diverse communities.
