As the Indian team prepares for the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur, the ongoing tension between Virat Kohli and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir casts a shadow. Despite speculation about a tense atmosphere in the locker room, Kohli and Rohit Sharma maintained their focus during a rigorous practice session on Tuesday.
Both players were seen batting together against throw-down specialists, demonstrating commitment through a challenging routine even under the night lights. Their concentration and performance indicated that off-field issues haven't influenced their approach to the series.
Gambhir kept a close watch on the training, spending extended time near the nets. This drew additional attention, especially since reports emerged of national selector Pragyan Ojha visiting Raipur to alleviate tension within the team. Concerns had surfaced regarding communication challenges between the head coach and senior players.
After the session, Kohli left with two bats slung over his shoulder and walked past Gambhir without a word. In contrast, Rohit stopped briefly to chat with the coach. These contrasting actions have only fueled debate concerning the dynamics between the two senior players and Gambhir.
Recent photos and clips circulating on social media highlight a lack of interaction between Kohli and Gambhir. While there were hopes for improvement following Kohli’s confirmation of participation in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, the overall atmosphere suggested that repairs might take additional time.
Despite the ongoing speculation, both Kohli and Rohit appeared fully engaged in their roles. Discussions around the future, especially regarding the 2027 ODI World Cup, seem to have little impact on their ongoing preparations. Kohli showed excellent form during the session, timing his shots effectively even as throwdowns intensified. Although a few deliveries surprised him with pace, he generally dominated the practice.
Other Indian players displayed similar vigor. Yashasvi Jaiswal wowed attendees with his powerful hitting, frequently clearing the leg-side boundary. Rishabh Pant was the last player to join the nets, concluding the team's training before the match.
With a 1–0 lead following a strong victory in Ranchi, India heads into the Raipur ODI with confidence. The black-soil pitch at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium is anticipated to facilitate another high-scoring contest, setting a competitive stage for the evening.
