The 28th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge kicked off in Dubai with a dramatic twist as Croatia's Petra Marcinko advanced decisively, defeating Slovakian veteran Viktoria Hruncakova 6-4, 6-1. Celebrating her 20th birthday week, Marcinko showed great skill and efficiency, wrapping up the match in 75 minutes on court No. 1.
The tournament saw some shocking early departures, notably top seed Dalma Galfi, who had to retire against qualifier Tereza Martincova while trailing 1-2 in the second set due to a foot injury. Former doubles world No. 1 Kristina Mladenovic also faced an early exit, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Alevtina Ibragimova in a quick 73-minute match.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old British talent Mika Stojsavljevic, fresh from her junior US Open win, kept the excitement alive with a victory over Valentina Ryser 6-4, 6-3, setting up a clash against third seed Sinja Kraus. Ibragimova will take on sixth seed Linda Fruhvirtova in the next round.
Marcinko, who recently won the Fujairah W75 title and previously claimed the 2022 Australian Open junior title, stressed the vital role of momentum as she approaches the Australian Open cutoff tournament. Although she recognized Hruncakova's challenge, her composure in critical moments made the difference.
The first set was tightly contested, with both players trading breaks. Errors from Hruncakova, including double faults, enabled Marcinko to take the initiative. In the second set, the Croatian quickly surged ahead with two early breaks and maintained her lead to win decisively. Next up, she faces Great Britain's Harriet Dart, who comfortably defeated Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama 6-1, 6-1.
Despite moving on due to Galfi’s injury, Tereza Martincova expressed mixed feelings about her win, considering the unfortunate situation for her competitor.
With high-profile players out early, the tournament remains unpredictable while highlighting new talent, keeping fans on edge to see who will seize the opportunity next.
