On Saturday, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) relaunched direct flights to the UK, concluding a five-year ban that was enforced due to safety issues. This marks a significant achievement for PIA, which has dedicated considerable effort to regain its reputation and standing in international aviation.
The ban was instated in June 2020 after a devastating Airbus A320 accident in Karachi resulted in nearly 100 fatalities, attributed to human factors. This incident led to restrictions not just from the UK, but also from the European Union and the US. Since then, PIA has revamped its protocols surrounding pilot training, licensing, aircraft upkeep, and safety measures to align with international benchmarks.
In July 2025, the UK lifted its ban on airlines from Pakistan after verifying that their aviation safety practices met adequate global standards. PIA now offers a twice-weekly service connecting Islamabad with Manchester, with intentions to broaden its operations to cities like London and Birmingham.
At the Islamabad International Airport, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif hailed this development as a crucial milestone for PIA, underscoring the airline’s dedication and perseverance in mitigating past challenges.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had also rescinded its ban on PIA in November 2024, enabling the airline to resume flights to Paris earlier this year, further boosting confidence in its enhanced safety measures.
Established in 1955, Pakistan International Airlines was formerly a source of national pride. However, financial woes, poor management, and regulatory hurdles have tarnished its image. The government plans to privatize PIA, although attempts have stalled previously due to unresolved issues regarding valuation.
The reestablishment of PIA's flights to the UK not only restores crucial international links but also exemplifies the airline’s commitment to safety, professionalism, and adherence to global aviation standards.
