The Picante cocktail has surged in popularity within India’s vibrant nightlife. On weekends, it’s commonplace to see busy servers delivering drinks adorned with chilli salt rims and a striking orange-green color. Before even checking the menu, many patrons recognize it as the Picante, which typically costs ₹800 and above, making it a sought-after choice among the youth.
This tequila-infused cocktail boasts a bold combination of spicy and tangy flavors, expertly blending tequila, lime juice, agave syrup, fresh chilli, and coriander. To many, it resembles a “fiery chaat in a glass,” marrying flavors that resonate with the Indian palate. Although widely embraced in India, the Picante was originally crafted in 2012 at SoHo House in Los Angeles, later making its way into Indian bars.
Industry experts attribute the drink's popularity to its appealing ingredients familiar to the Indian taste. Yangdup Lama, co-owner of Sidecar—one of Asia’s esteemed bars—points out that the key lies in achieving balance. A bite of chili that's too intense can ruin the drink, as can an excess of coriander. However, when harmonized correctly, the Picante shines with refreshing, spicy, and soothing qualities. Lama likens it to the Bloody Mary, a savory drink that hasn’t found its audience in India due to its heavier profile.
Moreover, bartenders note a shift in Indian preferences. Consumers are opting for well-balanced beverages rather than overly sweet or fruity concoctions, leaning towards fresher and spicier profiles. Reports indicate that one in five tequila orders now comprises the Picante.
Not only is the Picante gaining traction, but it’s also collecting accolades. The Leela’s exquisite variant was honored as the “Iconic Cocktail of the Year” at the 2025 Icons of Whisky Awards, even featuring at Milan Fashion Week, where Indian chilies replaced traditional jalapeños, demonstrating its expanding global footprint.
Many industry insiders assert that the Picante is on the verge of becoming a contemporary classic. Naveen Rathee from The Westin Gurgaon highlights that it possesses the same simple, emotional resonance as the Margarita. Guests are now ordering the Picante just as readily as iconic drinks like the Old Fashioned and Negroni, hinting at the drink's long-term staying power.
This rising trend showcases India’s developing taste—bold, adventurous, and receptive to new flavors. With its blend of heat, freshness, and balance, the Picante has undeniably captivated the nation’s attention, sip by tangy sip.
