The Kok River has long served as a vital resource for agriculture in northern Thailand, sustaining crops such as pumpkins, garlic, corn, and okra. However, this once-clear waterway now symbolizes an escalating ecological emergency.
Tip Kamlue, a 59-year-old farmer residing in Tha Ton, has relied on the Kok for irrigation throughout her life. Since April, local authorities have cautioned against using this water due to pollution, leaving Tip and her community dependent on groundwater. “It feels like part of me is lost,” she voiced as she stared at the river, now untrustworthy.
Recent studies have brought to light the significant dangers posed by over 2,400 mines throughout mainland Southeast Asia. Many of these operations are illegal or poorly regulated, discharging harmful substances such as cyanide and mercury into water bodies. A U.S.-based report by the Stimson Center utilized satellite imagery to uncover numerous mining sites involved in extracting gold, nickel, copper, manganese, and rare earth minerals, all contributing to pollution in the Mekong basin.
The Mekong River, which plays a crucial role for over 70 million individuals while supporting the region's agricultural exports, is being compromised due to minimal regulatory enforcement, leading researchers to express grave concerns.
Specific alarm is directed at new rare earth mines located in eastern Myanmar, close to the Thai border. Tests performed on the Kok River have revealed heightened levels of arsenic and rare earth minerals like dysprosium and terbium, elements often associated with gold and rare earth mining activities. This contamination aligns with operations that cater to China's manufacturing of magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military technology.
Local farming communities are becoming increasingly desperate. Banners calling for the closure of mining operations still hang across bridges in Tha Ton, symbolizing the battle to revive a river that once flourished. Tip Kamlue articulates her fellow farmers' yearning: “I wish the Kok River could return to its former glory—where we could fish from it, bathe in it, play in it, and irrigate our fields.”
