Beirut is set to host one of its largest assemblies in years, with over 120,000 individuals expected to attend Pope Leo XIV’s mass on Tuesday — the climactic and eagerly awaited day of his momentous trip to Lebanon. His presence brings a significant sense of optimism to a nation grappling with the remnants of conflict, economic strife, and memories of the catastrophic 2020 port explosion.
The pontiff arrived in Beirut on Sunday after departing from Turkey, marking his inaugural international journey as Pope. His accompanying message has focused on resilience, solidarity, and support for Lebanon’s youth, many of whom feel increasingly dispirited by the country’s uncertain future.
For the people of Beirut, this visit has been a much-needed emotional uplift. “It has brought a smile back to our faces,” remarked Yasmine Chidiac, among the eager crowds hoping to see the pope on Monday.
Open-Air Mass Under Close Watch
The anticipated open-air mass will take place near Beirut’s seafront, with registration numbers far exceeding initial forecasts. Authorities have enforced rigorous security measures, restricting access to significant areas of central Beirut from Monday evening and establishing checkpoints throughout adjacent districts.
A Reflective Visit to the Port
Ahead of the mass, Pope Leo is scheduled to visit the port — the scene of one of the most significant non-nuclear explosions in modern history. The August 4, 2020 disaster claimed over 220 lives and devastated large sections of the city. Despite numerous warnings about the ammonium nitrate stored there, efforts to investigate the incident remain hindered by political interference.
At the port, the pope will hold a moment of silent prayer and meet with the families of victims and survivors, many of whom are still seeking answers five years on.
Humanitarian Efforts and Youth Engagement
Earlier on Monday, the pontiff visited a psychiatric hospital run by nuns, engaging with both staff and residents in an initiative that resonated profoundly within the local community.
He received an enthusiastic welcome in Bkerke, the headquarters of the Maronite church, where thousands of youthful Lebanese greeted him as a global symbol. Addressing approximately 15,000 youths, he encouraged them to channel their passion into rebuilding their country. “You possess the enthusiasm to alter the course of history,” he proclaimed, eliciting loud cheers.
A Uplifting Presence in a Challenging Time
From interfaith discussions with Christian and Muslim leaders to spontaneous interactions with attendees lining the streets, Pope Leo XIV’s tour of Lebanon has emerged as a beacon of hope amidst political discord and fears of renewed conflict with Israel. For many, even a fleeting moment of unity and positivity feels refreshing.
As Beirut gears up for Tuesday’s significant assembly, the city finds itself at a junction of sorrow, faith, and renewed optimism — and for now, the pope’s involvement provides countless reasons to look ahead rather than dwell on the past.
