Pope Leo made a significant stop at Istanbul’s famed Blue Mosque on Saturday, marking the first occasion he has entered a Muslim worship venue as the leader of the Catholic Church. This visit was part of his inaugural four-day journey to Turkey. Although he respectfully removed his shoes, he did not engage in prayer but instead conveyed a message of peace through attentive silence.
As the first American pope, Leo's visit is garnering global interest. Entering the mosque in white socks, he offered a slight bow and spent around twenty minutes exploring the expansive space, which accommodates up to 10,000 worshippers. Guided by the imam and the Istanbul mufti, he learned about the mosque’s historical and architectural significance. The pope appeared at ease, even sharing light-hearted moments with the lead muezzin, the Muslim call to prayer announcer.
Upon leaving the mosque, Leo humorously pointed out a door marked “No exit” to his guide, who kindly remarked that the pope was welcome to stay as long as he wished. This interaction reflected the amicable tone of the visit.
After his tour, the muezzin mentioned that he had invited the pope to pause for prayer, to which Pope Leo graciously responded that he preferred simply to observe and learn. The Vatican later articulated that the pope's time in the mosque was intended as a moment for reflection and respect for the Muslim faith. His quiet demeanor signified a desire for understanding rather than active participation.
Known officially as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the Blue Mosque is renowned for its numerous blue-tiled interiors and has stood as a vital cultural and religious icon in Istanbul for centuries. It is situated opposite the Hagia Sophia, a significant site in Christian history. Unlike predecessors, Leo chose not to visit the Hagia Sophia during his trip, a notable choice given that previous popes, including Francis in 2014, did visit this landmark. The sensitivity surrounding the Hagia Sophia’s conversion back to a mosque in 2020 adds context to this decision.
Pope Leo's choice of Turkey as the site for his first international trip commemorates the 1,700th anniversary of an essential early Church council that took place there, resulting in the creation of the Nicene Creed, a unifying statement of faith for most Christian denominations. His visit coincides with a period where numerous faith communities face challenges due to conflict and violence.
During a ceremony acknowledging the historic council on Friday, Pope Leo addressed Christian leaders from the Middle East, including representatives from Israel, Syria, Egypt, and Turkey. He condemned all types of violence unjustly conducted in the name of faith and urged Christian groups to bridge historical divides, calling it a “scandal” that 2.6 billion Christians remain detached after centuries.
Pope Leo’s visit to the Blue Mosque, characterized by simple gestures of acknowledgment, silence, and a commitment to cultural appreciation, underscores his intention to foster interfaith connections. By opting not to pray yet demonstrating profound respect for the sacred site, Leo indicated a preference for dialogue over discord. This initial international voyage as pope has already attracted significant attention, prompting many to anticipate how his leadership will influence future interfaith dynamics.
