The Dubai Ports Authority (DPA), part of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), has launched an advanced aerial monitoring system called “Port Eye.” This system uses autonomous drones and artificial intelligence to improve safety, monitor environmental conditions, and inspect port infrastructure across Dubai’s maritime zones.
Autonomous Drones Improve Safety and Efficiency
Port Eye drones are equipped with 4K thermal imaging cameras and environmental sensors. They operate autonomously within a smart control network, providing real-time video feeds and data analytics. This reduces the need for manual inspections in high-risk areas, ensuring safer operations for port staff and vessels.
Supporting Sustainability Goals
The system aligns with the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030 and Net Zero 2050 goals. By monitoring emissions and marine pollution, Port Eye helps reduce environmental impact. Early results show inspection time has dropped from four hours to just fifty minutes, increasing efficiency by over 60%.
Real-Time Data and AI Insights
Port Eye features AI-driven image and video analysis and sensors that measure sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other pollutants in real time. The data is displayed on a 3D interactive dashboard connected to DPA’s command center, allowing rapid response and predictive maintenance for port infrastructure.
Enhancing Operational Safety
The platform provides continuous monitoring of ship emissions and environmental conditions. It can quickly detect potential risks, from structural issues to pollution threats, ensuring compliance with international standards and creating a safer maritime environment.
Setting a Benchmark for Smart Ports
Port Eye is the first system of its kind in the region. Its combination of autonomous drones, AI analytics, and environmental monitoring sets a new global standard for smart port operations. The initiative strengthens Dubai’s position as a leading hub for maritime innovation and intelligent safety management.
The Dubai Ports Authority plans to expand Port Eye’s coverage and continue integrating advanced AI tools. The project demonstrates Dubai’s commitment to combining technology, sustainability, and operational excellence to create a smarter, safer, and more efficient port ecosystem.
