Prada, the esteemed Italian luxury brand, has successfully finalized its acquisition of the renowned Versace for €1.3 billion ($1.51 billion). This significant move is aimed at broadening Prada's influence in the luxury market, extending beyond its primary brand and Miu Miu.
Discussions surrounding this acquisition date back to the pandemic era, with heightened interest following the collapse of Capri Holdings’ proposed sale of Versace to Tapestry due to antitrust issues. Lorenzo Bertelli, the son of Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, has been instrumental in driving this transaction and is set to become executive chairman of Versace post-integration.
Established by Gianni Versace in 1978, the brand is synonymous with bold, defined designs, making it a stand-out entity in the global fashion arena. Prada's acquisition brings Versace into a portfolio characterized by heritage, luxury, and potential for growth.
This acquisition also arises after Donatella Versace's departure as creative chief in March, concluding nearly thirty years in that role. Dario Vitale, the former design director at Miu Miu, is now at the creative helm of Versace, marking a fresh beginning for the iconic brand.
Experts believe this acquisition not only fortifies Prada's market presence but also widens its luxury offerings amidst fierce competition. The blending of Versace's rich aesthetics with Prada's strategic focus aims to strengthen brand identity and enhance global reach.
