The luxury brand Prada continues to stir conversations, but this time, it’s not about its glamorous runway presentations. The Italian fashion label has launched an ostensibly basic accessory — a safety pin brooch — steeply priced at ₹69,000 ($775).
The piece, called the "Crochet Safety Pin Brooch," is coated in eye-catching crochet thread and includes Prada’s signature triangle logo charm. Constructed from brass and cotton, it measures around 3.15 inches and is available in three vibrant color combinations: blue and brown, baby pink with pistachio green, and orange with brown, capturing an autumn feel.
What has astonished many is the price disparity when contrasted with the affordable safety pins readily available for mere ₹10 in local markets. Social media users have been quick to share their thoughts. One remarked, “This is exactly something we would make in school during arts and crafts!” Another user added, “I can craft this with any color and easily find a gold charm for the pin hole.” The staggering price differences prompted further comments, like, “I could fill my entire wardrobe for ₹70,000,” while others recounted their experiences buying similar pins at just a few rupees.
This isn’t the first time Prada has faced backlash over pricing. Previously, the brand introduced Kolhapuri-style chappals priced at ₹1.2 lakh, sparking critiques for not acknowledging the traditional Indian craftspeople behind the designs. This controversy escalated into a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High Court, demanding redress for alleged design appropriation.
While high-end fashion brands frequently price everyday items at steep rates to enhance their exclusivity and brand image, the safety pin brooch saga highlights the delicate balance between luxury fashion and public doubt. Many see this as a daring assertion of brand status, while others dismiss it as frivolous excess.
