In a spectacular display of football, Paris Saint-Germain emerged victorious with a 5-4 win against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-final's first leg. This match at Parc des Princes was bursting with excitement, marking the highest-scoring semi-final first leg in the history of the tournament.
Both teams committed to relentless attacking play, resulting in a thrilling showdown filled with counterattacks, contentious calls, and heart-stopping moments as they vied for the crucial lead ahead of the second leg in Munich next week. Although PSG appeared to control the game at times, a resilient Bayern made a spirited comeback.
Bayern Munich started strong, taking the lead in the 17th minute when Harry Kane converted a penalty kick awarded after PSG's Willian Pacho fouled Luis Díaz in the box. Kane coolly placed the ball past goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to notch his 13th goal of the tournament.
PSG quickly leveled the score through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose curling strike after cutting in from the left wing dazzled the crowd. The Georgian forward consistently challenged Bayern's defense with his impressive speed and skill.
The Paris side then gained the lead as midfielder João Neves scored with a header during a corner, overcoming pressure from Bayern defenders. Yet, Bayern responded through Michael Olise, who finished a swift attacking move to equalize it at 2-2.
Just before halftime, PSG regained the upper hand after the referee ruled a handball against Bayern's Alphonso Davies following a VAR review. Despite protests from Bayern, Ousmane Dembélé converted the penalty to put PSG ahead 3-2 at the break.
PSG maintained their aggressive play in the second half, with Kvaratskhelia netting another goal after exposing Bayern’s high line. Moments later, Dembélé scored his second to extend the lead to 5-2.
Though PSG seemed to be in control, Bayern refused to surrender. Dayot Upamecano cut the deficit with a header from a Joshua Kimmich free kick, and Luis Díaz soon followed with another goal, tightening the score to 5-4.
In the closing minutes, Bayern pushed fiercely for an equalizer, while PSG struggled defensively. A last-minute goal-line clearance from Willian Pacho saved PSG from conceding again.
After the match, PSG manager Luis Enrique remarked on the intensity of the game, praising both teams for their attacking approach. He acknowledged the physical and emotional toll it took on his players.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, while disappointed, expressed confidence in his team’s chances during the second leg at the Allianz Arena, asserting they would continue to attack aggressively.
The result leaves the semi-final delicately placed ahead of the return leg in Munich. With both squads exhibiting striking prowess and defensive vulnerabilities, fans can look forward to another high-octane encounter as PSG aims for the Champions League final, while Bayern seeks to overturn the deficit.
The winner will secure a place in the Champions League final set for May 30 in Budapest.
