In a thrilling encounter at the San Siro, AC Milan clinched a vital 1-0 victory over their rivals Inter Milan on Sunday, thanks to Christian Pulisic’s key goal and impressive saves from goalkeeper Mike Maignan. This win is significant in the Serie A Scudetto race, propelling AC Milan into second place as Inter fell to fourth.
Entering the derby on a three-match winning streak, Inter was eager to regain the top position in the league. However, a prior 3-1 win by AS Roma over Cremonese put them at the top, intensifying the competition. Currently, AC Milan stands at 25 points, trailing Roma by two and equal with Napoli, while both Inter and Bologna are at 24 points.
The match commenced with a rhythm of high tension, as Inter created numerous chances. Maignan showcased exceptional reflexes, making several critical saves, including a one-handed dive to deny Marcus Thuram and blocking a header from Francesco Acerbi that struck the post. Lautaro Martinez also forced a standout save from the Milan goalkeeper, keeping the score level at halftime despite a close attempt from Pulisic.
The decisive moment hit nine minutes into the second half. Milan launched a rapid counter-attack, with Youssouf Fofana passing to Alexis Saelemaekers. His low shot was initially saved by Inter's Yann Sommer, but Pulisic was quick to capitalize on the rebound, pushing Milan ahead 1-0.
Milan pressed on, creating further chances, including a near miss from Rafael Leao and a save from Sommer on a Fofana attempt. As Inter sought an equalizer, they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Strahinja Pavlovic with 16 minutes remaining. Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up but was thwarted by Maignan's brilliant positioning as he saved the shot, clearing the ball to earn Milan a corner.
Though Inter controlled the ball for the rest of the match, AC Milan maintained solid defensive organization. This win extends Milan's unbeaten streak against Inter over their last six encounters, underscoring their local supremacy. Not only does this victory bolster Milan's morale, it also delivers a strong message to other contenders in the fiercely competitive Serie A.
Milan's effective combination of tactical discipline and rapid counter-attacks proved crucial. Pulisic's precise finish and Maignan's essential saves emphasized the squad's ability to thrive under pressure. AC Milan looks well-prepared to continue their quest for the Serie A title, while Inter needs to regroup swiftly to remain in the championship chase.
Fans and pundits commended Milan's efficiency, particularly in converting their lone clear chance and maintaining firm defense under late-game pressure. The derby victory at San Siro not only grants AC Milan city bragging rights, but it also significantly boosts their league standing, keeping the race for the Scudetto very much alive.
