After a six-game absence due to a toe injury, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy made a triumphant return, leading his team to a commanding 41-22 victory against the Arizona Cardinals. In an impressive display, Purdy completed 19 of 26 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns, reinforcing the 49ers' 7-4 season record.
The scoring commenced quickly, with running back Christian McCaffrey dashing into the end zone on the first play after a 98-yard kickoff return by Skyy Moore. This initial score set an energetic tone for the 49ers, allowing Purdy to take charge immediately once Arizona was forced to punt.
During his first drive, Purdy demonstrated his readiness by connecting with Jauan Jennings and Demarcus Robinson on deep throws. He then struck gold with a 30-yard touchdown throw to George Kittle, granting the 49ers an early two-score lead, albeit after a blocked extra point.
In the second quarter, Purdy maintained his momentum with a 9-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey, who celebrated his second touchdown of the day. The team reached halftime with a solid 25-10 lead, thanks to two field goals along with their touchdowns, displaying an impressive offensive rhythm whilst the defense kept the Cardinals at bay.
The third quarter saw Purdy link up with Kittle again, this time for a touchdown that marked Kittle’s 50th career score, sparking cheers from the 49ers' fans and extending their lead considerably.
Although the Cardinals managed to score two touchdowns in the final quarter, the outcome was already sealed. The 49ers responded decisively, with McCaffrey charging in for a 20-yard run and his third touchdown of the game, solidifying the result.
Despite a record-setting performance from Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who completed 47 of 57 passes for 452 yards and two touchdowns, the Cardinals fell to a disappointing 3-7. Notable contributions from Bam Knight and Michael Wilson weren’t enough to level the playing field against San Francisco's well-rounded team.
Dealing with the toe issue since week one, Purdy was sidelined following the injury's aggravation in Week 4. Although backup Mac Jones held the fort, head coach Kyle Shanahan was keen to reinstate Purdy as soon as he was cleared to play.
With manageable matchups against the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans coming up, alongside a bye week, the 49ers look poised to capitalize on Purdy’s outstanding performance as they navigate the competitive NFC West.
