Spain displayed their prowess by sailing to a 4-0 triumph over Sweden in the first leg of the Women's Nations League semi-final on Friday. Showcasing remarkable skill and teamwork at home, the Spanish squad seized an important lead as they prepare for the return leg in Gothenburg next week. Standout players Alexia Putellas and Claudia Pina each netted two goals, leading Spain’s relentless offensive charge.
The scoring kicked off in the 11th minute with a stunning free kick from Alexia Putellas that found the top corner, leaving Sweden’s goalkeeper helpless. This goal marked the beginning of a match filled with Spanish attacking enthusiasm, energizing the crowd in attendance.
Claudia Pina doubled Spain's lead in the 32nd minute with a cool finish after receiving a precise pass in the box. The Spanish squad's seamless attacking play had the Swedish defense struggling to keep pace. This goal added to the evidence of Spain's command over possession and territorial control, setting them apart in the first half.
Just three minutes later, after a shot from Pina hit the crossbar, Putellas took advantage of the rebound to score her second, pushing Spain's lead to a solid 3-0 at halftime. The dynamic interplay between Putellas and Pina proved too much for Sweden to handle.
Sweden sought to regroup after the break, showing more intent in attack, yet Spain maintained their grip on possession and dictated the game’s rhythm. Their organized defense and swift transitions continuously thwarted Sweden's attempts to score.
In the closing moments, Pina found the net again, solidifying the final score at 4-0 for Spain. This goal underscored their continuous attacking threat and showcased their ability to exploit defensive mistakes by Sweden. By the end of the match, Spain had established a domineering lead for the upcoming second leg.
In earlier action, Germany edged out France with a 1-0 win in Duesseldorf, setting the stage for their own second leg matchup on Tuesday. The winners of these semi-finals will face each other in a two-legged final on November 28 and December 2, promising thrilling encounters ahead in the Women’s Nations League.
