On Thursday, President Vladimir Putin of Russia declared that the Ukrainian government lacks legitimacy, asserting that engaging in any peace pact with Kyiv would be pointless. His remarks came at the conclusion of a three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan, where he characterized the proposal put forth by US President Donald Trump as merely a “collection of topics for discussion”, while acknowledging it could potentially serve as a foundation for future talks.
Putin criticized Ukraine's leadership for not organizing elections since President Volodymyr Zelensky’s term has lapsed. He claimed that this loss of legitimacy undermines any potential agreements. However, Ukrainian representatives have responded, explaining the impossibility of holding elections amid martial law as the country continues to defend against Russian advances.
According to Putin, although the US has acknowledged Russia's stance in their dialogues, several critical issues remain unaddressed. He stressed the importance of thorough examination of every detail within the proposals. “We need to sit down and discuss this seriously. Every word matters,” he stated.
The Russian president outlined the prerequisites for halting hostilities, insisting that combat would only cease if Ukrainian forces withdraw from the territories currently occupied by Russia. He asserted that should Ukraine decline, Russia would fulfill its aims “by force.” Previously, he had called for a complete Ukrainian pullback from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions, including zones not currently under Russian command, before any peace discussions could begin.
In addition to territorial requirements, Putin demands assurances that Ukraine will not join NATO or host any Western military presence, aiming for a gradual reintegration of the country under Moscow's sway.
Ongoing diplomatic efforts include an anticipated visit by US special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow next week, alongside potential travel by US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to Kyiv. The conflict, ignited by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has since escalated into the deadliest armed conflict in Europe since World War II, capturing global attention and inciting international dialogue.
