Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi this evening for a two-day official State visit, coinciding with the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. This marks his first trip to India since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, with his last visit occurring in December 2021. Invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Putin's visit seeks to enhance the long-standing "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" shared by both nations.
Throughout his time in India, Putin is expected to hold extensive discussions with Indian officials covering various topics such as trade, economic collaboration, science and technology, cultural exchanges, and regional as well as global matters of common interest. Reports suggest the signing of over ten intergovernmental agreements and more than fifteen commercial and non-commercial memorandums during the visit, highlighting the depth of India-Russia cooperation across multiple domains.
Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi will host an exclusive dinner for Putin in New Delhi. On December 5, the Russian leader will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan, which will include a tri-services guard of honour, and he will visit the Raj Ghat memorial to pay his respects to Mahatma Gandhi. Formal discussions will take place at Hyderabad House, where both leaders will review advancements in bilateral relations and outline future cooperation priorities.
Ahead of his arrival, Russia has indicated that discussions may include the potential sale of additional S-400 long-range missile defense systems and India’s interest in acquiring Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets. Kremlin officials have underscored the collaboration in defense technology, particularly concerning the production of BrahMos missiles and the exchange of high-tech expertise, emphasizing its significance for the future of their strategic partnership. Conversations on nuclear energy agreements are also anticipated to be part of the agenda.
This visit marks the 25th anniversary of the India-Russia Strategic Partnership, initially established in October 2000 and elevated to a "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" during Putin's previous visit in December 2010. Both countries are looking to bolster trade and economic relations, aiming for a bilateral trade volume of 100 billion dollars by 2030. In 2024-25, trade between India and Russia achieved a record 68.7 billion dollars, showing the increasing economic collaboration.
Accompanying Putin are senior Russian officials, including Defence Minister Andrey Belousov, representatives from Roscosmos, Rosatom, and VEB.RF, along with leaders from major Russian financial and industrial entities such as Rosneft, Sberbank, Basic Element, Rusal, and VTB Bank. Their participation underscores Russia's strategic focus on enhancing relations with India.
This high-profile visit signifies a reaffirmation of India and Russia's commitment to deepening political, economic, and defense collaborations, marking a pivotal advance in their enduring bilateral relationship while jointly addressing global and regional challenges.
