In a recent address during his visit to Kyrgyzstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will only conclude if Kyiv relinquishes control of regions currently occupied by Russian forces. He asserted that without such a concession, military operations aimed at seizing these territories will persist.
The Russian military has been making significant advances in eastern Ukraine, engaging in fierce and costly confrontations against Ukrainian forces, who are facing challenges due to being outnumbered. Cities in the Donetsk region, namely Pokrovsk and Myrnograd, are reportedly under siege according to Russian claims, although Ukrainian officials assert that their troops maintain positions along critical front lines.
Since its onset in February 2022, this war has become the most lethal in Europe since World War II, with Russia occupying nearly 20% of Ukrainian territory. Control over these contested regions remains a significant hurdle in peace negotiations.
In parallel, the United States has proposed a new initiative aimed at resolving the nearly four-year-long conflict. Putin has characterized this plan as a possible foundation for diplomatic talks, even as Russia continues to push for international acknowledgment of its occupied territories.
Ukrainian officials, however, have categorically rejected any notion of territorial concessions. Andriy Yermak, a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, remarked that no land transfer will occur as long as Zelensky holds office, indicating that current discussions must involve clarifying the fight's existing front lines, which span over 1,100 kilometers.
Diplomatic efforts persist, with US envoy Steve Witkoff set to visit Moscow next week to deliberate on the updated peace initiative, while US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll will travel to Kyiv later this week for security dialogues.
Furthermore, Putin has expressed doubts regarding Zelensky’s authority, contending that agreements with his government would face legal challenges—a claim met with criticism from Ukraine and its allies. Analysts observe that Russian forces have been capturing an average of 467 square kilometers each month in 2025, a notable increase from the previous year.
The ongoing conflict has led to devastating destruction, resulting in hundreds of thousands of fatalities and displacing millions. Despite repeated calls for peace, Moscow maintains that Ukraine must make territorial concessions before any substantial dialogue can occur.
