PV Sindhu: PM Modi’s support uplifts India’s athletes

Post by : Meena Hassan

Two-time Olympic medallist and former world champion PV Sindhu says Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s encouragement has been a meaningful source of motivation for Indian sportspersons. She noted that the PM often highlights effort, commitment and perseverance rather than focusing solely on the colour of a medal.

Valuing Effort Over Medals

Sindhu explained that when athletes leave competitions disappointed at missing gold, Modi reminds them that simply winning a medal is a significant achievement. She said the prime minister routinely acknowledges the hard work behind each performance, whether competitors just miss a podium place or a critical chance.

Recalling her own experience after taking bronze, Sindhu admitted it was natural to feel down about not securing a higher finish, but added that Modi’s perspective helped reframe the result as an accomplishment rather than a failure.

She emphasized that the Prime Minister extends this recognition to all athletes, including those who lose by narrow margins, demonstrating a focus on their spirit and effort over the final outcome.

Impact on the Indian Olympic Contingent

Sindhu also described the boost the Indian contingent received from Modi following the Tokyo Olympics. When the women’s hockey team finished fourth and were understandably upset, the prime minister’s words helped restore their confidence and pride.

She said Modi avoids characterising performances as losses and instead stresses national pride in athletes’ dedication, telling them they had done exceptionally well and that the country was proud.

Sindhu reflected on a personal note earlier this year, observing a symbolic overlap between her career milestones and Modi’s time as Prime Minister — a parallel she described as having shaped key chapters of her sporting journey.

For Sindhu and many other competitors, the PM’s steady appreciation is more than public recognition; it is reinforcement of the discipline, dedication and fighting spirit that represent India on the global stage.
