Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu's commendable journey at the Malaysia Open came to an end in the women’s singles semifinals, where she faced off against China’s Wang Zhiyi. This tournament marked Sindhu's return after a prolonged absence due to a foot injury that sidelined her since last October. Despite her resolute efforts, she was edged out in straight games, finishing 16-21, 15-21 against the world number two.
Right from the start, Sindhu displayed her determination to showcase her fitness. She adopted her aggressive playing style early, featuring powerful cross-court smashes. The first game saw a thrilling exchange of leads, highlighting both players’ skill sets. Sindhu momentarily took the lead at 5-2, but faced a strong response from Wang, whose clever net play kept the pressure mounting. As they continued to vie for dominance, Wang’s consistent attacking shots enabled her to outpace Sindhu, who made critical errors, allowing Wang to take the first game 21-16.
In the second game, Sindhu rebounded strongly, initially capitalizing on Wang's errors to establish a 6-3 lead. Displaying her court mastery, she pushed Wang to the corners with well-angled shots and tight net play, reaching an 11-6 advantage at the mid-game break. It seemed Sindhu was poised to equalize the match.
However, post-break, Wang mounted a comeback, raising the intensity of her attacks. The rallies became more fast-paced, enabling Wang to reduce the deficit. As Sindhu's earlier momentum faded, the frequency of her unforced errors increased, allowing Wang to level the score at 13-13. With a series of strategic net exchanges and strong smashes, Wang began to dominate.
With the pressure escalating, Sindhu’s mistakes grew more frequent. She misfired on crucial backline shots and made a backhand error, giving Wang five match points. Seizing the opportunity, Wang closed out the match when Sindhu sent a shot wide, concluding the match at 21-15.
Though this defeat marked the end of India’s stint in the Malaysia Open, Sindhu's performance demonstrated her tenacity as she continues her recovery journey. Returning from a significant injury is challenging, and her ability to compete closely with a top player bodes well for her upcoming tournaments.
Looking ahead, Sindhu aims to regain full fitness and consistency, drawing on this experience to rise in the rankings and contend for major titles in the upcoming season.
