Qatar concluded the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games with an exceptional haul of 11 medals, displaying remarkable skills in various sports. The event, hosted by Saudi Arabia, culminated in an elaborate closing ceremony held at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University Stadium on Friday evening. Amid a gathering of thousands of athletes from all around the globe, Qatar’s success prominently illustrated the nation’s rising prowess in regional athletics.
The journey for Qatar began with swimming, where Ali Tamer won a silver medal in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, marking the nation’s first medal of the tournament and setting a positive momentum for the subsequent events. Soon after, weightlifting star Wissal Khalef distinguished herself by securing three gold medals in the women’s over-86 kg category, solidifying her status as one of Qatar’s standout athletes during the Games and rapidly enhancing the medal tally.
Qatar’s brilliance extended into other sports as well, with Sheikh Ali bin Khalid Al-Thani clinching silver in the equestrian show jumping event. His exceptional control and technique earned Qatar its fifth medal. The fencing team also made headlines as Khalid Al Yafei bagged a bronze in the men’s foil competition. In wrestling, Shaheen Mohammed showcased his strength in the 77kg category, ultimately taking home a bronze medal. Moreover, the Qatari 3x3 basketball team contributed to the medal count with a bronze finish after a challenging tournament.
As the Games drew to a close, Qatar augmented its medal tally with three more on the final day. The men’s fencing team secured silver in the team foil event following consistent performances throughout. The national handball team also showed remarkable grit by earning a bronze medal, while Abubaker Haydar triumphed with a bronze in the 800m athletics race, proudly wrapping up Qatar’s participation.
Overall, Qatar achieved 3 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals across diverse sports. These accomplishments underscore Qatar’s unwavering commitment to sports development and athlete training. The Games also brought to light the escalating level of competition among participating nations.
Leading the medal standings, Turkiye triumphed with a total of 155 medals—72 gold, 44 silver, and 39 bronze. Uzbekistan followed in second place with 96 medals, including 29 gold. Iran secured third with 81 medals, while the host nation, Saudi Arabia, ranked fourth with 57 medals, and Egypt rounded out the top five with 45 medals. The robust competition underscores the growing significance of the Islamic Solidarity Games.
Over 3,000 athletes from 57 nations participated in the 23-sport event, marking one of the largest iterations of the Games. The lineup featured athletics, swimming, judo, fencing, wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, karate, Muay Thai, esports, camel racing, wushu, and more. Additionally, para-sports events like para-athletics and para-powerlifting contributed to the inclusive nature of the Games.
Qatar was represented by a delegation of 82 athletes across 16 different sports, including duathlon, 3x3 basketball, karate, equestrian, wrestling, volleyball, handball, taekwondo, table tennis, judo, weightlifting, swimming, camel racing, fencing, and para-athletics. This breadth of participation reflects Qatar’s dedication to nurturing talent across a variety of athletic disciplines.
With 11 medals and numerous outstanding performances, Qatar’s athletes have showcased their determination, skill, and increasing prominence in the global sports arena. Their success in Saudi Arabia is sure to inspire a new generation of athletes in Qatar, paving the way for future achievements in both regional and global competitions.
