Qatar has demonstrated impressive athleticism at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, securing two bronze medals in fencing and wrestling. Running through November 21st, the event unites over 3,000 athletes from 57 nations, promoting unity and athletic excellence across the Islamic community.
Khalid Al Yafei was the first to clinch a bronze for Qatar in the men’s foil fencing event, displaying exceptional skill and tenacity against formidable opponents. His achievement highlights Qatar's progressing fencing scene and commitment to enhancing its profile in individual sporting disciplines.
The second bronze was brought home by wrestler Shaheen Mohammad, who competed vigorously in the 77kg category. His tactical prowess and resilience throughout the competition mark a significant milestone for Qatar’s wrestling sector, as it continues to cultivate a competitive athlete pool for regional and global events.
With these additions, Qatar now boasts a total of seven medals at the Games, featuring three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. This consistent performance illustrates Qatar's ambition and capability across diverse sports.
In handball, the national team maintained an unblemished record, crushing the Maldives 44-6, which enabled them to end the preliminary round as Group A leaders, having won all their games comfortably. Prior victories include triumphs over Iran (39-23) and the UAE (41-24).
Next, Qatar will take on Bahrain in the semifinals, while Saudi Arabia faces the UAE in the other semifinal matchup. The team aims to defend its gold medal from the last edition held in Konya, Türkiye, in 2022.
Qatar also made strides in camel racing, a cherished tradition in the region. Athlete Hazem Abdullah Al Nudailah has qualified for the men's 2000-meter finals after securing second place in his heat at Al-Janadriyah Racecourse, presenting yet another medal opportunity on Wednesday.
In athletics, Qatari runner Abubaker Haidar earned a place in the 800-meter final following a strong showing in his heat, clocking in at 1:50.09, as he aims to contribute another medal to Qatar's tally.
Shot put representative Ahmed Jibril showed commendable performance, finishing fourth with a throw of 18.51 meters, narrowly missing out on a medal yet competing valiantly against elite athletes from various countries.
The ongoing successes of Qatar’s athletes reflect their robust teamwork and competitive spirit at the Islamic Solidarity Games.
