R Ashwin Critiques England's Lackluster Performance in First Ashes Test

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Former Indian spinner R Ashwin has expressed his disappointment with England's performance in the initial Test of the Ashes 2025 against Australia in Perth. The match concluded in under two days, with Australia claiming victory by eight wickets. England’s batting faltered in both innings, failing to surpass 200 runs, with none of their batsmen lasting beyond 61 balls. Ashwin labeled their approach as alarmingly careless, uncharacteristic of Test cricket.

Ashwin particularly criticized England’s aggressive playing style, known as Bazball. He remarked that the players were taking unwarranted risks without considering the match context. To him, their attacking strategy resembled “reckless cricket”, rather than intelligent batting, noting that characterizing their style as reckless might even be too gentle, as they repeated mistakes despite quick dismissals.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin discussed how many young players, including some from India, are adopting similar high-risk approaches even when fielders are stationed on the boundary. He questioned how a side could persist with aggressive shots without strategy, especially following a first-day collapse for just 172 runs.

Ashwin emphasized that England squandered a significant opportunity. After their bowlers managed a modest 40-run lead, the batters needed to play with more caution. He argued that the primary responsibility of a batting unit is to offer their bowlers ample recovery time. India’s head coach Rahul Dravid often stresses this point. Instead, England's batsmen faltered again, compelling their bowlers to return to the field almost immediately.

With England being dismissed cheaply for the second time, Australia only required around 200 runs to win—a minor target in Test cricket. Ashwin noted that the English bowlers would have benefited from more rest, but instead faced immediate pressure due to their batters' irresponsibility, making the defeat even harder to swallow.

In response to former England captain Michael Vaughan, who expressed faith in England's capacity to rebound, Ashwin conveyed his hope for a quick recovery. He warned that, without significant improvement in their batting, the Ashes tour could turn into a prolonged struggle.

Ashwin further explored the limit of modern batting styles, arguing that risk-taking is essential, but teams must discern when to be aggressive and when to defend. He observed that England was failing to adapt to varying conditions, mirroring a uniform approach every time. He concluded that Test cricket demands patience, awareness, and maturity—qualities that England showed a lack of in this match.

Australia's dominant victory has set them 1-0 ahead in the Ashes series. Their bowlers leveraged the conditions expertly, while their batters easily chased the small target. Meanwhile, England faces multiple challenges to address before the next Test. Ashwin’s insights highlight the growing concerns among former players regarding England’s Bazball methodology under pressure.
