Actor R Madhavan recently shed light on the changing perceptions of Indian men on a global scale. In a heartfelt discussion with his De De Pyaar De 2 co-stars Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh, and Meezan Jafri, Madhavan humorously pointed out that years ago, Indian men abroad were often viewed with skepticism, particularly by white women who assumed they were being flirtatious.
Madhavan remarked on the significant transformation that has occurred.
“In the past, walking into a bar abroad meant we faced these skeptical looks from white women, as if we were just there to flirt. Now, it’s changed—when an Indian man enters, they think he’s an entrepreneur. I haven’t encountered that representation of an Indian man in films yet,” Madhavan laughed.
He went on to express a wish for this confident image of Indian men to be depicted more frequently on screen.
Madhavan Reflects on Evolving Male Roles in Cinema
Madhavan also shared insights on the evolution of male roles in movies. He stated that while Indian cinema is making strides toward showcasing more complex and self-assured male characters, there remains significant room for improvement. He noted a tendency among filmmakers to cater to established influences rather than pursue new, authentic narratives.
“The industry's traditional mindset is what hinders creativity at times; they seem focused on appeasing their mentors rather than telling fresh stories,” he stated.
He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with contemporary directors who can merge modern ideas with meaningful storytelling.
Madhavan is set to star in Anshul Sharma’s De De Pyaar De 2, the sequel to the 2019 hit featuring Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. This anticipated film, produced by T-Series Films and Luv Films, picks up the narrative from its predecessor and is scheduled for theatrical release on November 14.
Additionally, he will appear in Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, alongside Ranveer Singh, Arjun, Akshaye Khanna, and Sanjay Dutt. Recently, Ranveer unveiled Madhavan’s dramatic look from the project, referring to his character as the “Charioteer of Karma.” Dhurandhar is set to premiere in cinemas on December 5, 2025, followed by a Netflix release.
