Rajamouli's Varanasi Reveals Poster Without Actor Names, Sparks Discussion

Post by : Meena Hassan

The highly anticipated film Varanasi by SS Rajamouli was officially announced at a grand event in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, featuring appearances by Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Following the event, the film's title poster drew significant attention, notably for the absence of the lead actors' names.

The reveal video, lasting three minutes, concludes with the statement “SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi,” attributing credits to writer V. Vijayendra Prasad, music director MM Keeravani, and key crew members. However, the names of the principal actors are conspicuously missing from both the poster and the title card.

This choice has generated a buzz, sparking discussions among fans who questioned the reasoning behind the omission. Rajamouli’s dedicated followers explained that this stylistic choice has been a hallmark of his work since Baahubali—emphasizing the significance of the story, world, and characters rather than the stars. In his films, actor introductions are often left unnamed until the end credits, allowing the narrative to take precedence.

Viewers noted that Rajamouli himself stands as a prominent global brand associated with the film, with audiences often recognizing his works more by his name than by the cast. Fans highlighted that Rajamouli's storytelling prowess and vision have become the principal draws, eclipsing even well-known names.

The title reveal also provided the first insights into the film's characters, stirring further interest:

  • Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, depicted riding a bull through the vibrant streets of Varanasi.

  • Priyanka Chopra steps into the role of Mandakini, a captivating, gun-toting figure clad in a saree.

  • Prithviraj Sukumaran assumes the role of Kumbha, the antagonist, portrayed seated in a wheelchair.

Details regarding the characters remain scarce, fueling intrigue surrounding the expansive, multi-era narrative that spans continents and centuries. Currently in production, Varanasi is set for global release on Sankranthi 2027.
