Major IPL Trade on the Horizon: Samson to CSK

Major IPL Trade on the Horizon: Samson to CSK

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a breathtaking development in the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals (RR) are poised to send their captain and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In exchange, RR is set to acquire prominent allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. This proposed deal has the potential to transform the dynamics of both franchises ahead of the upcoming IPL season.

Reports indicate that discussions between RR and CSK regarding the trade have already commenced, involving all three players. However, no official confirmation from either team has been provided yet. For the trade to proceed, both franchises must formally notify the IPL governing council and obtain consent from the players involved. Once those written approvals are in place, the agreement can be finalized and sent for approval by the governing council.

Sanju Samson has been an integral part of the Rajasthan Royals, standing by the franchise for 11 seasons and taking on the captaincy since 2021. Rising through the ranks as a promising talent, he became a crucial player for RR. Under his leadership and the insights of team director Kumar Sangakkara, RR clinched a spot in the IPL final for the first time since 2008.

Samson's captaincy spans 67 matches, with a record of 33 wins and 33 losses. His outstanding performance in the 2024 IPL saw him scoring 531 runs at an impressive average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.47. Furthermore, he holds the title of RR’s all-time leading run-scorer with 4027 runs, along with the highest number of catches (149) and shares the record for the top individual score (124). Unfortunately, an injury sidelined him for the latter half of the 2025 season, leading to RR’s disappointing ninth-place finish.

Following the unsatisfactory 2025 season, Samson has reportedly communicated to RR his desire to move on, requesting a release to explore new opportunities. This spurred RR management to initiate trade talks with various franchises, culminating in negotiations with CSK to swap for Jadeja and Curran.

Ravindra Jadeja, a cornerstone of CSK since joining in 2012, has significantly contributed to three championship victories. His heroics in the 2023 final, scoring the winning runs against Gujarat Titans, highlighted his importance. In the 2025 season, he recorded 301 runs, featuring two half-centuries, solidifying his key role on the team.

With 254 IPL matches under his belt, Jadeja ranks fifth in the league’s history. As CSK's top wicket-taker with 143 scalps, his personal best bowling figures are 5 for 16. He shares the record for the most Player-of-the-Match awards (16) for CSK with MS Dhoni. Although he briefly led the team in 2022, he later returned the captaincy to Dhoni.

Sam Curran, the dynamic English allrounder, has been a staple of the IPL since 2019, initially with Punjab Kings and then returning in 2023 at a record INR 18.5 crore. After a successful stint with CSK in 2020 and 2021, where he showcased his all-round prowess, he rejoined CSK in 2025 for INR 2.4 crore, but struggled during the season, scoring just 114 runs and claiming one wicket across five games.

Interestingly, Jadeja’s IPL journey began with the Rajasthan Royals in 2008 when he was just 19. As part of RR’s maiden title-winning squad under Shane Warne, this trade could facilitate an emotional return to where it all started.

If this trade materializes, it will be a game-changer in the IPL. For CSK, Samson stands as a fitting successor to MS Dhoni, potentially ensuring a smooth transition as the team evolves. Meanwhile, RR will gain Jadeja’s wealth of experience alongside Curran’s versatile talents, bolstering their lineup.

Although neither franchise has issued a public statement yet, approval from the IPL governing council remains the next step. The proposed move has already ignited enthusiasm among fans and, if confirmed, will distinguish itself as one of the largest trades in IPL history, possibly shifting the equilibrium of the league heading into IPL 2026.
