Unique Ant Species Found in Sharjah's Hajar Mountains

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In the picturesque Hajar Mountains of Sharjah, researchers from the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) have unveiled a remarkable find: a new ant species named Carebara Sharjahensis, also known as the “Sharjah Ant.” This marks the first sighting of the Carebara genus within the UAE, and only the third species identified in the Arabian Peninsula.

This exciting discovery was made during comprehensive field studies in Wadi Shees led by Professor Dr. Mustafa Sharaf from the EPAA’s Al Dhaid Wildlife Center. Despite thorough explorations, only one “soldier” ant was captured, indicating that this species may inhabit highly specialized underground environments that make them difficult to find.

The Sharjah Ant is notable for its unique characteristics: it features prominent lateral horns on each side of its head, delicate sensory hairs, a consistent yellow body color, and distinct structural elements in the head and thorax. Interestingly, while it bears some resemblance to a species found in Zimbabwe, its differences are significant enough to warrant recognition as its own separate species.

This significant discovery highlights Sharjah’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity and ecological research. The Hajar Mountains, celebrated for their ecological wealth, continue to unearth rare and indigenous species, contributing to the emirate's natural legacy. Ongoing research aims to locate more members of this ant colony, including queens, males, and workers believed to be living underground among decaying organic matter.

This extraordinary finding accentuates the ecological importance of the Hajar Mountains and establishes Sharjah as an emerging center for specialized scientific research in the region.
