Rashmika Mandanna is back in action with The Girlfriend, following her recent roles in Chhaava, Sikandar, and Thamma. This romantic drama, which she both penned and directed with Rahul Ravindran, premiered on Friday but faced a slow start at the box office.
As per initial figures from Sacnilk, The Girlfriend made ₹1.3 crore on its debut day, marking the lowest opening for Rashmika this year. In contrast, her last film Thamma celebrated a grand Diwali debut with ₹24 crore. The new film released on a regular Friday with limited marketing support, rendering its success particularly reliant on audience word of mouth.
The cast also includes Dheekshith Shetty, Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh, and Rohini. It weaves a tale of a seemingly enchanting romance that becomes toxic due to Shetty’s character's aggressive demeanor.
Rashmika shared her emotional bond with the film, stating on X, “When Rahul presented the script, I couldn’t help but get emotional. Some scenes profoundly moved me… Bhooma resonates with me on a personal level.”
With encouraging feedback gradually rolling in, the box office trends over the weekend will determine if The Girlfriend can gain traction in cinemas.
