Ravens Triumph Over Browns with Andrews' Last-Minute Touchdown

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a thrilling NFL showdown, the Baltimore Ravens secured a key 23-16 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The game proved tightly contested until the closing moments, when a surprising play shifted the momentum. Tight end Mark Andrews, typically known for receiving, became an unlikely hero by scoring his first-ever rushing touchdown. His remarkable 35-yard run on a fourth-and-1 play not only clinched the win but also marked the Ravens’ fourth consecutive triumph, improving their season record to 5-5.

The clash unfolded in Cleveland, where the Browns faced a challenging 2-8 record. While Cleveland struggled offensively, their formidable defense, led by star pass rusher Miles Garrett, kept the match competitive throughout.

As the clock ticked down to just over three minutes remaining, the Ravens confronted a pivotal fourth-and-1 situation. After the Browns halted Derrick Henry on the previous attempt, tension filled the air. Contrary to expectations, the Ravens opted for a clever play. Andrews received a direct snap, deftly circumventing defenders to dash down the right side of the field, sprinting unopposed into the end zone.

This decisive touchdown broke a 16-16 deadlock, concluding the game in Baltimore's favor. Notably, prior to this run, Andrews also made history by becoming the Ravens’ all-time leading receiver, surpassing the record previously held by Derrick Mason.

The game also marked the NFL debut for Browns' rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Entering the game at halftime due to a concussion sustained by Cleveland’s starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Sanders aimed to inject life into the offense but faced challenges against Baltimore's staunch defense.

Sanders’ final stats included four completions on 16 attempts for 47 yards, alongside one interception. Nevertheless, he showcased mobility with 16 rushing yards and successfully recovered a fumble.

Baltimore’s quarterback, Lamar Jackson, experienced a mixed performance, completing 193 passing yards but throwing two interceptions. Despite setbacks, Jackson executed crucial plays, including a pivotal long pass to Zay Flowers that set the stage for a touchdown by Derrick Henry in the second quarter.

Defensively, Miles Garrett continued to impress, notching four sacks, totaling an impressive 11 in just the last four games. With 15 sacks this season, Garrett solidifies his position as one of the league’s premier defensive players.

The Browns capitalized on early mistakes by Baltimore, including an error by Ravens rookie punt returner Lajohntay Wester, which allowed Cleveland to regain possession deep in Ravens territory. This led to a field goal that put Cleveland ahead 6-3.

Shortly after, another misstep occurred when Lamar Jackson’s pass deflected off running back Keaton Mitchell’s hands into Devin Bush’s awaiting arms. Bush returned it for a touchdown, granting Cleveland a 13-3 lead for his first career interception in six years.

Responding swiftly, Lamar Jackson orchestrated a rapid 63-yard drive highlighted by a significant catch-and-run from Zay Flowers, culminating in a powerful 1-yard touchdown from Derrick Henry, narrowing Cleveland's lead to 13-10.

From that moment on, the Ravens gradually seized control, tightening their defense and minimizing errors, culminating in Andrews' late-game score.

This victory keeps the Ravens firmly in the playoff race within the AFC. With the team's momentum building through four straight wins, they head confidently into the latter part of their schedule, while the Browns, now 2-9, face dwindling hopes for playoff contention.
