The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) showcased their prowess in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, achieving a commanding 61-run win against Gujarat Giants, thereby clinching a playoff spot. Gautami Naik's impressive half-century and a commendable bowling display propelled RCB to their fifth successive win this season.
This victory marks RCB as the second team, following the Mumbai Indians in 2023, to record a five-match winning streak in a single WPL season. Moreover, this victory is RCB’s largest by runs in the tournament's history.
RCB Bounces Back After Early Setbacks
During their inaugural match of the season at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, RCB faced an early crisis, finding themselves at 9 for 2. Renuka Singh dismissed Grace Harris in the very first over, while Georgia Voll was out bowled while attempting a cut shot shortly thereafter.
Smriti Mandhana and Gautami Naik then partnered to stabilize the innings. Mandhana counterattacked against Gujarat Giants captain Ash Gardner with some boundaries, while Naik gradually regained her form. The duo managed a vital 50-run partnership by the end of the eighth over.
However, Gardner returned to break their partnership, getting Mandhana out for the fourth time in their WPL encounters.
Gautami Naik Steals the Spotlight
Naik anchored the innings excellently, notching up her maiden WPL half-century off just 42 balls, making her the first uncapped Indian player to achieve this milestone in WPL history. Richa Ghosh added valuable momentum with a quickfire 20-ball knock that featured three sixes, while Radha Yadav contributed some late runs.
RCB posted a strong total of 178 for 6, benefiting from some lackluster fielding from Gujarat Giants, who allowed 21 extras, the joint second-highest in WPL history.
Gujarat Giants' Chase Crumbles
Chasing a target of 179, the Gujarat Giants encountered a disastrous start. Sayali Satghare claimed both openers in one over, dismissing Beth Mooney for just 3 and Sophie Devine without scoring. Lauren Bell then bowled out Kanika Ahuja, leaving the Giants reeling at 5 for 3.
Anushka Sharma displayed a bit of resistance but eventually fell to Nadine de Klerk, leading Giants to a precarious 56 for 6.
A determined half-century from Ash Gardner included some aggressive shots including boundaries and a six against Bell, but the required run rate became insurmountable. Satghare returned to dismiss Gardner and finished with three wickets, restricting the Giants to 117 for 8.
RCB Advances Confidently
The RCB bowlers shared the wickets effectively, delivering a comprehensive all-around performance. This victory confirms RCB’s place in the playoffs and reinforces their reputation as a formidable team in WPL 2026.
