A remarkable jewel has emerged at auction in London, as the Imperial Winter Egg, crafted by the legendary Fabergé, realized an astonishing £22.9 million ($30.2 million), breaking previous records held by the prestigious jeweller.
Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1913 as a gift for his mother, the Winter Egg stands among Fabergé’s most treasured works. Designed by Alma Theresia Pihl, one of only two female artisans at the famed St. Petersburg workshop, the piece reflects exquisite craftsmanship.
Measuring 8.2cm, the egg features rock crystal, lavishly adorned with rose-cut diamonds and platinum snowflakes. Inside, a delicate basket of white quartz flowers awaits, epitomizing Fabergé’s meticulous artistry.
This auction result eclipses the prior record of £8.9 million set in 2007 for another Fabergé egg. Of the original 50 eggs created for the Romanov dynasty from 1885 to 1917, merely seven are still privately owned, underscoring the extraordinary nature of this piece.
The Winter Egg now holds its place among the rare Fabergé artifacts that have endured through upheavals and time, symbolizing the cherished legacy of Imperial Russia.
