A remarkably rare piece of art that had been lost for centuries has left the art community in awe. A previously unrecognized work by Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens was recently uncovered in a private residence in Paris and sold for €2.3 million at an auction in Versailles on Sunday.
The journey to its rediscovery began unexpectedly when Jean-Pierre Osenat, an auctioneer, spotted what was thought to be a mere workshop painting valued at around €10,000. The artwork, which depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, belonged to a French family and had been hidden away for generations. Initial impressions soon gave way to revelations about its significant past.
Following meticulous scientific analysis, the painting was confirmed to be an authentic Rubens. Microscopic evaluations revealed the artist’s distinctive technique, which included layering white, red, black, and delicate hints of blue and green pigments to create realistic skin tones, fitting with Rubens' methods from the early 17th century.
What makes this piece particularly unique is its emotional representation of Christ’s body. Among Rubens' many interpretations of the crucifixion, this artwork is said to be the only known painting that depicts the moment blood and water flow from Christ's side—an interpretation that the artist never duplicated.
The painting's intriguing history adds to its allure, having virtually vanished from the 17th century and reemerging in the 1800s within the collection of prominent French painter William Bouguereau, only to disappear into private ownership again.
Its return has sparked considerable excitement among collectors and art historians, culminating in an auction venue filled to capacity, where this once-overlooked piece garnered a multimillion-euro final bid. The transformation from a lowly valued item to a significant historical find represents an extraordinary chapter in art rediscovery.
