Top-order batter Shubman Gill has been confirmed as absent for the second Test versus South Africa set to take place in Guwahati, due to an ongoing neck injury. The game kicks off on Saturday, and Rishabh Pant will step into the captaincy role, having temporarily led the team in the previous Test after Gill had to retire due to injury.
Gill arrived in Guwahati on November 19 following his observation at a Kolkata hospital. However, the BCCI announced on Friday morning that he wouldn't be able to play. Additionally, he will make a return to Mumbai for further evaluation of his condition. Experts advise that rushing back into play could exacerbate his neck spasms, and he has been guided to allow more time for recovery.
This news raises uncertainties regarding Gill's availability for the ODI series commencing on November 30, with squad selections expected to be revealed on November 23. Currently, no official replacement for Gill has been named; however, India’s management may consider B Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, or Nitish Kumar Reddy to fill his position.
Gill's injury originated during the Kolkata Test, where he faced just three deliveries before retiring. On the third day’s morning, the BCCI disclosed he wouldn’t continue in the match. India was ultimately defeated by 30 runs after being bowled out for 93 while chasing 124 runs on a pitch presenting uneven bounce. This isn’t Gill’s first encounter with neck issues, as he had previously missed a Test against New Zealand in October 2024 due to a similar condition.
Before departing to Guwahati, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak remarked on the team's need to prioritize Gill’s health. “He is showing good signs of recovery. The final call will come tomorrow evening from the medical team. Even if he feels better, we cannot afford to risk a surprise spasm in gameplay,” said Kotak.
Gill’s absence significantly impacts India’s batting lineup, given his renowned consistency in both Test and limited-overs formats. As the second Test rapidly approaches, team management faces the urgent task of selecting a suitable replacement to maintain squad balance.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant, who stepped up as captain in Kolkata in place of the injured Gill, will now fully lead the team in Guwahati. His leadership will be vital as they navigate a formidable challenge against South Africa. The management will need to strategically adapt the batting order to fill the gap left by Gill's experience and steadiness at the crease.
Fans and cricket analysts are keenly observing this situation, as Gill's recovery and potential return for the ODI series could prove critical for India’s prospects in the upcoming battles against South Africa.
