Rivian Automotive has announced a recall of 34,824 electric vehicles in the United States, stemming from a critical defect in the driver’s seat belt system. This concern relates to a damaged pretension cable that may fail to properly secure the driver during a crash, heightening the risk of injury.
The recall targets specific 2022–2025 EDV models, as confirmed by Rivian in collaboration with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To mitigate this issue, Rivian is implementing a two-pronged approach: first, an over-the-air software update has been deployed to enhance safety features in the affected vehicles. Secondly, drivers may need to have their seat belt pretension assemblies inspected and replaced if faults are identified.
NHTSA has emphasized the urgency of this recall despite no reported injuries related to the defect, due to the serious risk of seat belt failure during an accident. Owners of the affected EVs are urged to promptly apply the software update and arrange any inspections necessary through Rivian’s service centers.
This situation underscores the increasing challenges faced by electric vehicle manufacturers in ensuring safety within their intricate systems. Experts suggest that Rivian’s swift measures, which combine remote updates with necessary physical inspections, could significantly help in preventing potential incidents while preserving consumer confidence.
