Roblox Implements Mandatory Age Checks to Protect Young Users

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Roblox is set to implement significant safety measures, prohibiting children from chatting with adult strangers on its platform. This change marks a pivotal moment for the gaming giant, which sees over 80 million daily users, nearly 50% of whom are under the age of 13.

The new update introduces compulsory age verification for any account utilizing chat, beginning in December for users in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The global rollout is expected to commence in January, establishing Roblox as the first leading gaming platform to mandate facial age estimation for chat privileges.

Under the revised system, users must undergo a camera-based age assessment within the Roblox app. The technology claims to accurately estimate users' ages within a one-to-two-year range for those aged between five and 25. Once verified, players will be categorized into age groups—under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Chat functions will be restricted to players within similar age brackets unless both parties agree to become “trusted connections,” designated for acquaintances only.

For children under 13, the most stringent restrictions remain in effect. Private messaging and various chat functionalities will stay disabled unless permitted by a parent. Roblox affirms that these initiatives are crucial in preventing adult contact with younger users, a pressing issue for many families and regulatory bodies.

Roblox has faced continuous scrutiny regarding child safety. The company is currently involved in lawsuits in Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana, claiming that it has inadequately protected minors from potential predators. Previous BBC tests revealed circumstances where a 27-year-old could exchange messages with a 15-year-old on separate devices, raising concerns about enforcement reliability.

Privacy continues to be paramount with this update. Roblox maintains that all age verification images will be processed by a third-party provider and deleted right after the verification process. Parents will retain the ability to oversee and update their child's information post-verification.

The timing of this announcement coincides with mounting global scrutiny on online safety. Australia is on the brink of introducing a social media ban for users under 16, and advocacy groups are urging gaming platforms to bolster safety measures. A recent virtual protest within Roblox highlighted this issue, garnering over 12,000 signatures for a digital petition advocating for safer features.

With this new initiative, Roblox aims to provide age-appropriate interactions and minimize the likelihood of adult engagement with vulnerable youth. These changes seek to redefine user interactions on the platform as the company strives to regain trust and comply with heightened global online safety regulations.
