Roger Mayer, a determined 69-year-old athlete from Australia, captivated audiences at the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2025. Competing in the Masters division, Brown Belt, 94kg category, he took on Russian contender Gasan Dzhamalutdinov, who is 20 years younger. Despite facing a younger and stronger opponent, Mayer lost the match by a mere point, finishing with a smile. He remarked, “I turned 69 last October, and my opponent was 49 and very strong. But I was happy he couldn’t take me down or submit me. I stayed in the fight until the end and lost by one point. For me, that’s enough to call it a successful experience.”
For Mayer, participating in the Abu Dhabi championship was a long-awaited milestone. He appreciated the event's professionalism, organization, and camaraderie among the athletes. The welcoming environment and mutual respect among competitors left a lasting impression, turning the experience into one that goes beyond just medals or accolades.
A former police officer for over 35 years, Mayer began his jiu-jitsu journey after retirement. Based near Wollongong, south of Sydney, he trains almost daily and embraces the martial art for its physical and mental challenges. Although he practiced martial arts in his earlier years, jiu-jitsu offers him distinct rewards in fitness, mental clarity, and personal growth.
Mayer’s story is a testament to the value of passion, perseverance, and commitment to sports at any age. He may not be in pursuit of trophies or titles, but his journey exemplifies that age should not hinder anyone from seeking new challenges and purpose in life. His bravery and positive mindset inspire fellow athletes, proving that dedication and love for sports can bridge generational gaps.
During the championship, Mayer received applause from spectators and fellow competitors alike, establishing himself as a symbol of grit and resilience, where motivation and determination triumph over mere victories. His experience highlights the broader advantages of martial arts, including discipline, fitness, and mental health, encouraging individuals to maintain active lifestyles, regardless of age.
Roger Mayer’s involvement at the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Championship stands as a celebration of spirit, tenacity, and the timeless allure of sportsmanship, leaving an indelible impact on the competition and those who witnessed his extraordinary journey.
